Elspeth Attwooll taught in the School of Law from 1966 until 1998, serving as the Head of the then Department of Jurisprudence. She was elected as a Liberal Democrat member of the European Parliament in 1999, and served until 2009.

In addition, she regularly contested the Westminster constituency of Glasgow Maryhill, which existed until 2005 boundary reforms subsumed the seat into Glasgow North and Glasgow North East.

All this is well-known to School staff and alumni. What most of us didn’t know, however, is that Elspeth had previously trained an elephant.

And she campaigned with it.

Lost Glasgow have a photograph of Elspeth out meeting voters on an elephant in 1974.

It puts modern political campaigning into a certain perspective.
