Head of School, Professor Iain Macneil, and CREATe Programme Leader, Dr Sukhpreet Singh, were invited to be a part of a University wide delegation that visited partners across three metro and two state capital cities of India between 1 and 11 Nov 2016. The School of Law programme consisted of visiting more than 25 different institutions (including leading law universities, law firms, industry associations, study abroad facilitators, and, key education sector influencers). An immediate outcome of the visit has included signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, on 2 December 2016 at Glasgow, between Professor Anne Anderson, Vice Principal and Head of College of Social Sciences, University of Glasgow, and, Professor Ranbir Singh, Vice Chancellor of the National Law University Delhi, one of the premier law education and research institutions of India.
The School of Law is also scheduled to organize an executive training programme for a high level delegation of Indian public sector organizations in Spring 2017. This is the series of other short programmes in subjects like corporate governance, intellectual property law, and, competition law, in which the School of Law has particular interest, and where expertise has been sought by several potential Indian partners to conduct short online as well as in country programmes. One such programme, the CREATe Summer School in intellectual property, will be organized from 29 June to 1 July 2017.
Other opportunities explored in India include linking up with international moot court competitions to raise Glasgow’s profile, assessing in country law firms to offer internships and study abroad opportunities for School of Law students as well as increasing the intake of students from India in the School’s postgraduate teaching and research programmes. The School has invested this year in two scholarships worth 50% of full international fees, open especially to students with an LLB degree from India. A follow up visit to India is planned for 2017 to consolidate links created and to develop new ones.
